Director, Animal Management & Health Department: Zoo Full-time, Salary Salary Range: $91,187.20 - $135,075.20/yr Job Summary Manage and provide leadership for the Animal Division: staff, the care, welfare, and health of the animal species, the Zoo conservation and research programs, and the Animal Division budget. Contribute to Zoo strategic planning, policy development and support. Oversee the conception, design, development, commissioning and the operation of animal facilities and exhibits.

Job Responsibilities • Animal Division Director - Develop and manage the Animal Division staff. Manage the acquisition, disposition, welfare and exhibition of the animal collection. Oversee development and implementation of animal conservation and research programs. Establish and enforce policies and procedures.

  • Senior Management Responsibilities - Serve on the executive management team of the Zoo. Contribute to the development of the Zoo department and Animal Division strategy, planning, policy development and support. Perform other Zoo Senior Staff duties. • Animal Facilities Manager - Manage and conduct all aspects of new and existing animal facilities development including conception, design, planning, plan review, construction review and commissioning.
Oversee animal facilities major maintenance and modifications. • Budget Manager - Develop and oversee all aspects of Animal Division budget. Develop budget proposals, oversee revenues and expenditures including trust funds, Society funds, Animal Division operating and capital sectors. • Zoological Society Liaison - Develop, coordinate, and manage joint Society/Zoo operations.

Liaise with Society CEO, CFO, Education, Conservation, Development, Membership, Creative, Volunteer Services and IT departments. Serve as a lecturer, tour guide or facilitator to assist in Society operations. • Zoo Representative - Represent Zoo and AZA interests in international, national, regional and state legislation and regulatory standards regarding animal conservation and welfare. Liaise with other zoos, organizations, regulators, the media and the public with regards to Zoo operations.

  • Professional Development Facilitator - Facilitate the professional development of the Animal Division staff through participation in classes, workshops, seminars, conferences, conservation, research programs, and professional organizations. Participate in AZA and other professional programs and committees. • Ability to properly or safely operate vans, pickup trucks, golf carts, bicycles, standard office equipment, computers, weapons, and emergency animal capture equipment. • Ability to push, pull, carry and lift up to 25 lbs.
  • Other duties as assigned. Required Education, License/Certification and Experience • Valid Driver’s License required and must be maintained throughout employment • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Zoology or closely related field required • Three (3) years or more work experience in Zoo Animal Facilities Design required • Five (5) years or more work experience in Zoo Animal Care required • Five (5) years or more work experience in a Supervisory, Management or Director role required • Basic knowledge of all related computer and software applications such as Microsoft Word, Teams, PowerPoint, Outlook and Excel required Note: This unclassified position is open to all qualified applicants authorized to work in the United States. The incumbent must establish residency in Wisconsin within six (6) months of appointment and maintain such residency throughout their incumbency.
